Shoulder Impigment Syndrome is an inflammatory condition of tendons and other structures of the shoulder, on the acromion bone during raising the hand.
What are the Symptoms of Shoulder Impigment Syndrome?
The main symptom is pain, felt :
- during movement of the hand on frontal and dorsal
- consantly, even when the limb is not moving
- at night during sleep, particularly when lying on the affected side
The hand as a restricted range of motion in all directions, with raising being particularly painful.
Risk Factors of Shoulder Impigment Syndrome
Shoulder Impigment might be caused due to :
- intense activity with the hand higher than the shoulder, for a prolonged period
- due to bad motor control- especialy in athletic activities
- type II or III acromion - reduced subacromial space
- Infection
How can Physical Therapy Help with Shoulder Impigment?
During treatment the immediate concern is the cease of pain, which can be very acute in certain cases. This is achived through a combination of interventions, such as specialized massage and electrotherapy, which can be effective in any case. Then passive and active kinesiotherapy, with also specialized exercises is applied. Gradually, with the increase of shoulder range of motion, a set of exercises is introduced to strengthen the muscles of scapula and realign the joint, increasing the subacromial space and averting future deterioration of the clinical condition.
